I hacked a lot of the background away today. I started out with three stacked sheets, around 6" thick. Now, I doubt there are many areas where it is thicker than one sheet. So that was a waste!
I am making this in two pieces, one for the back of the tank, and the other for the side to curl around and meet the back piece. This one will hide all the filter pipes and heater. Yesterday I picked up a mountain of polystyrene and this evening I have siliconed a few of the blocks together to make the corner piece, so I can't do a lot with that until it dries.
In the meantime, I put my first coat of concrete on the back piece, along with some stones for texture. The pictures make it look really bad! I tried with and without flash but none look like the actual thing! Right now it is still wet, so I have no idea what colour it will finish. I'm guessing grey, but I have mixed in some pigment to some parts of it. I am aiming for a muddy/rocky riverbank effect. We shall see.
